Matua Magic

Fairbairn Builders were lucky enough to complete a significant renovation of this 1960's home, situated with magnificent views of Tauranga's harbour and over to Mount Maunganui. With sweeping views across the water it made each day a pleasure to come to work. The renovation consisted of a reclad, new joinery, new kitchen, new bathroom and ensuite, interior plaster and paint, and new flooring.

The north elevation overlooking the water was transformed to encompass and frame the stunning view. The original small windows were replaced by a large slider door. The roof at this end of the house was gabled, creating a smooth flow from the indoor dining area to a large covered alfresco.

The subtle colour scheme allowed for luxurious furnishings and fixtures.  This house is modern and elegant, and one we are very proud of.

The Build Brief

When Robin and Christina engaged us to undertake the renovation at Ranui Street, we talked about what the purpose of the renovation was, the outside of the house being tired and in need of a spruce up. Robin had a vision and this was focused around the view toward the Tauranga harbor, the ocean side of the property, while maximizing the houses position to its full potential.

The front of the house needed some serious changes to make it look modern and at the same time the home needed an outdoor covered living area that did justice to the property. The garage configuration needed changing to tackle the tight drive way and the entry needed to be a welcoming area that pulled you into the house. The shape of the house and proximity to the boundary had its challenges and it is not until you walk into the home, see the view, walk outside onto the grass out the front that you really appreciate what it has to offer.

We feel the renovations completed on this home have achieved all of the briefed requirements and more. We can’t say this was an easy renovation – it had its challenges. The existing home had been poorly built and poorly renovated in the past, and as this was a winter build without shrink wrap, we were super exposed to the northerly and westerly over the duration.

We reused the existing skirting and architrave as requested by the home owner, this was a very hard process to get looking like new but we think it looks great and it was a nice feeling to be reusing some of the old house were we could.

We can say the clients are still happy 1.5 years later and their testimonial says it all.

"We were fortunate enough to secure Jamie & his team from Fairbairn Builders to undertake a major renovation of our home at Matua. This was our third renovation project, but the first time we have used Fairbairn Builders and we couldn't be happier with our choice. Jamie and his team are extremely well organised and efficient, with a very high attention to detail. With a no-nonsense approach we knew we were in good hands and we are delighted with the end result. We could not recommend Fairbairn Builders highly enough. Thanks Team!"
